The holiday season is a time for connection, comfort, and tradition—but for individuals living with dementia, busy gatherings, loud environments, and changes in routine can sometimes feel overwhelming. The good news is that you can still create meaningful, joyful moments with your loved one in gentle, supportive ways.

Keep It Simple & Calm

Large holiday parties may be too stimulating, but small, quiet visits often feel more relaxed and enjoyable. Consider spending time in a familiar space where your loved one feels safe and comfortable.

Meaningful Activities to Share

• Soft holiday music from their era

• Looking through old photo albums or sharing stories

• Enjoying holiday lights from the comfort of the car

• Baking or decorating cookies together

• Helping them fold napkins, wrap small gifts, or sort cards

• Watching classic holiday movies they may recognize

• Doing a simple craft like making paper snowflakes or ornaments

These quieter moments can spark memories, reduce anxiety, and create genuine connection.

Honor Their Pace

Some days will be easier than others. Keep visits short if needed, watch for signs of fatigue, and allow your loved one to guide the moment. A few minutes of shared laughter or holding hands can be more meaningful than an hour in a noisy room.

Bring the Holidays to Them

If they aren’t able to attend gatherings safely, bring a little holiday cheer their way. A small tree, favorite scent, or cozy blanket can make their space festive without overwhelming them.

Your Presence Matters Most

Above all, remember that it’s not the size of the celebration that counts. It’s the warmth, patience, and love you share. Simple, calm, familiar experiences often create the most cherished memories during the holidays.
